Client Managers Turn a Rocky Start Into Donating 10 Bikes in Rosemont
The day started with a hiccup — a last-minute room issue meant the hotel staff had to pivot quickly to keep the event on track. The group was a little apprehensive at first, unsure what to make of an afternoon spent building bicycles in the middle of an intensive training program.
But that apprehension gave way fast. By the time the group finished, the energy in the room was high. Everyone was fully bought in, working together on ten brand-new bikes. There was even an unplanned moment near the end when a participant unexpectedly fainted. The group rallied around their coworker and handled it with care. Providing a good reminder of the teamwork the whole event was really about.
The 10 bikes went to Blackstone Bicycle Works, a program of Experimental Station that empowers youth on Chicago’s South Side. They provide education on bike mechanics, job skills, and life skills to kids ages eight to 18. Bruce Winston accepted the bikes on behalf of the organization, which instructor Scott Ray Merchant called one of the best charity partners he’s worked with: “These guys are the best!”
If you’re looking to add a meaningful team-building activity to your next conference, a charity bike build in Chicago gives any group a competitive, high-energy experience that ends with a real donation to the local community.
