FedEx brought 145 employees together on Sept. 1 in Memphis, TN, for a charity bike build as part of a multi-day company meeting. Employees from several FedEx companies, some local and some flown in, spent the afternoon completing the Build-a-Bike® program side by side. They then donated 18 finished bikes to School Seed Foundation for local kids.

FedEx Employees Race the Clock to Build Bikes for Memphis Kids
FedEx runs a program called FedEx Cares that builds a community service component into events like this one. When deciding what to do for this year’s charity event, a high-up manager recalled having seen how well a Build-a-Bike® event was done eight years prior at a different company. This lasting impact ultimately decided this year’s cause.
Once the teams got moving, the competitive streak came out fast. Groups worked through the build challenges eager to finish first, cheering each other on as much as racing the clock, right up until it was time for the group photo with the finished bikes. Unfortunately, the fire alarm went off first. Instructor Kelsey Johnston ended up taking the celebration photo outside instead, a small hiccup that did nothing to dampen the mood of a group that had just spent the afternoon building something real together.
The group’s 18 finished bikes went to School Seed Foundation. They are a Memphis nonprofit whose mission is to impact the lives of children and families through programs rooted directly in the community. Including Bridge Up Giddy Up, Kindred Place, and a Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program. Charity representative Vince McCaskill accepted the bikes on behalf of local kids.
If you’re looking to add a meaningful team-building activity to your next conference, a charity bike build in Memphis gives any group a competitive, high-energy experience that ends with a real donation to the local community.
