Compassion on Wheels: Wellstar Team Builds Bikes & Bonds in Atlanta, GA

Sixty palliative medicine providers from Wellstar Health System channeled their caregiving spirits in a new direction during a vibrant Build-A-Bike® charity team-building event in Atlanta, GA. These healthcare heroes—who spend their days navigating some of medicine’s most challenging emotional territories—embraced the chance to end their retreat with something refreshingly hands-on and uplifting. The prescription for the day? Equal parts teamwork, friendly competition, and community impact, with a healthy dose of fun thrown in. The result? A fleet of shiny new bikes destined for the Atlanta Children’s Shelter and a team of physicians with grease-stained hands and rejuvenated spirits.

Wellstar Health System isn’t just another healthcare provider—it’s a Georgia powerhouse of healing and hope. As one of the state’s largest integrated healthcare systems, they’ve racked up national rankings while maintaining that warm, local touch that makes patients feel like family. With nearly 25,000 diverse team members spread across hospitals, health parks, medical offices, and more, they’re basically running a small city dedicated to health. They also operate the second-largest Emergency Department in the entire country and are the only healthcare system in the state juggling multiple trauma centers at once.

From Healing Hearts to Building Bikes: Wellstar Shines in Atlanta, Georgia

LIVE! At the Battery Atlanta became an unlikely workshop as Wellstar’s palliative care specialists tackled seemingly simple (but surprisingly challenging) bike assembly instructions. For professionals who routinely navigate life’s most profound moments, figuring out which pedal goes on which side provided a welcome shift in perspective. The day kicked off with an ice breaker that sorted them into teams—proving that even medical professionals can be temporarily stumped by non-medical puzzles.

As wrenches turned and chains were threaded, these healers demonstrated that their teamwork extends well beyond hospital corridors. The friendly competition sparked both laughter and strategy sessions, with teams occasionally borrowing techniques from their medical training—”Clear communication! Double-check everything! When in doubt, consult the instructions!”

The bicycles ultimately found their way to the Atlanta Children’s Shelter, an organization providing crucial support to homeless families with young children. For Wellstar providers who specialize in difficult journeys, contributing to these children’s journeys toward joy and normalcy felt especially meaningful.

We’re sending a heartfelt prescription of thanks to Wellstar Health System for their generosity and commitment to community wellbeing. Their contribution proves that healing happens in many forms—sometimes with pedals attached.
