Nike Interns Come Together for Build-A-Bike® Event Near Portland, Oregon
The Build-A-Bike® event brought together sixty Nike interns in Beaverton, OR. They quickly discovered that assembling bikes requires slightly different skills than designing the perfect running shoe. Some participants initially attempted to attach reflectors with the power of brand marketing alone before switching to actual tools. This hands-on event provided an excellent platform for interns to develop teamwork and problem-solving skills. Proving that sometimes the best team “huddles” happen around a half-assembled bicycle rather than a conference table.
As the day progressed, a spirit of camaraderie enveloped the participants, creating an environment of synergy and unity that was almost as strong as the smell of new bike tires. One intern was overheard saying, “If we can connect these handlebars correctly, surely we can handle next quarter’s product launch!” The competitive edge that makes Nike successful in sportswear translated surprisingly well to bike assembly, with teams racing to complete their builds while maintaining quality that would make any engineer proud.
Aside from its focus on team-building, the event also underscored Nike’s commitment to community service. The bikes assembled by the interns were donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters Portland, a charitable organization that provides mentorship to children facing adversity. The joy of giving back to the community amplified the overall success of the event, with several interns noting it was even more satisfying than landing their internship in the first place—though the free Nike swag was still a close second.
We extend our sincerest thanks to Nike for their commitment to team-building and their impactful contribution to the local community. No instruction manuals were harmed during this process, though several were creatively reinterpreted. Our gratitude also extends to Big Brothers Big Sisters Portland for their crucial role in mentoring and supporting children in need.
