Seattle witnessed a different kind of child advocacy recently when Casey Family Programs transformed their office into a bustling bike workshop. Forty employees from across the organization—legal eagles, communications gurus, facilities experts, HR specialists, and tech wizards—came together for a Build-A-Bike® team-building event with a heartwarming twist. Teams challenged each other not just to build bikes, but to build them for the very children they champion every day. By day’s end, 12 gleaming bicycles stood ready for their journey to local foster youth. Additionally, dozens of professionals had discovered connections with colleagues from departments they rarely interact with.

As the nation’s largest operating foundation, they’ve planted their flag in all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and tribal nations. Their mission? Building communities where every child can thrive. For them, the Build-A-Bike® event wasn’t just team building. It was mission in motion, bringing their values to life through tangible action.

The scene at Casey’s Seattle headquarters transformed as colleagues who typically collaborate over emails and meetings suddenly found themselves sharing tools and deciphering assembly instructions. The event brought together staff from different departments in ways that typical workdays rarely allow. HR professionals, technology specialists, and legal experts worked side by side. They discovered new facets of teamwork beyond their usual professional interactions. The friendly competition had everyone’s competitive spirits firing on all cylinders, while the shared purpose—creating something meaningful for foster youth—kept the focus firmly on collaboration.
The gathering highlighted how diverse perspectives and skills could blend together toward a common goal. Participants discovered unexpected problem-solving approaches from colleagues in different departments, creating connections that would likely strengthen their everyday work relationships long after the event concluded.
The finished bicycles found their perfect match in Treehouse. This Seattle nonprofit specializes in giving foster youth the childhood experiences and resources they deserve. These 12 bikes will roll through Treehouse’s resource center and into the lives of children who often have precious few possessions to call their own. For an organization that spends its days tackling systemic challenges in foster care, creating immediate, tangible joy for individual children offered a refreshing reminder of why their work matters so much.
