Kiewit Corporation capped their summer intern presentation program with a charity bike build at Kiewit University in Omaha, Nebraska. Sixty-five interns and managers competed through team challenges and assembled 11 bicycles in one hour. All 11 bikes went to Completely KIDS, an Omaha-based organization dedicated to children and families in the community.
Kiewit Corporation is one of the largest construction, engineering, and mining companies in North America. Headquartered in Omaha since 1884, the company operates across the United States and Canada. Kiewit University serves as the company’s internal training and professional development center.
Sixty-Five Kiewit Interns and Managers Build 11 Bikes for Omaha Youth at Charity Bike Build
The intern class had put in a full summer before the team event started. Their program centered on developing public speaking and presentation skills. On the final day, interns presented in front of their managers and were evaluated. The charity bike build followed, a way to celebrate the summer’s work and close it with something that went back to the community.
When managers and interns end up on the same team, something useful happens. The professional distance that defines most workplace dynamics shrinks. Everyone is solving the same puzzle under the same clock. Interns who step up in that environment tend to be seen differently. That shift carries back into the work.
The event moved quickly, one hour, 65 participants, 11 teams, 11 bikes. The group finished everything in that window. All 11 bikes went to Completely KIDS, an organization that has served Omaha’s children and families for decades.
It is a strong way to end a summer intern program. The presentation work built skills. The charity bike build gave the class a final afternoon worth remembering.
