Compass Surgical Partners hosted a charity team bike build in Durham, NC, bringing 70 leaders together at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club. The session kicked off their Annual All Hands Meeting with a different kind of start. Instead of easing into presentations, the group jumped straight into something hands-on. After recent executive restructuring, the focus stayed on getting everyone aligned and working toward the same goals. The activity gave leaders a way to connect while actually doing something together, not just talking about it.

Compass Surgical Partners Meet to Build Teamwork and Connection During Corporate Charity Bike Build in Durham, North Carolina
The Build-A-Bike® setup pulled in leaders from across the organization, including the full C-suite, finance, development, and clinical teams. Surgery center administrators from around the country also joined in, which made for a pretty diverse mix. Teams were intentionally shuffled, so most people ended up working with colleagues they don’t usually interact with. That alone changed the tone right away.
Once things got rolling, each group settled into its own style. Some teams mapped everything out before touching a single part, while others jumped in and figured it out as they went. The back-and-forth between approaches kept things interesting. Conversations moved quickly, ideas bounced between teammates, and a little friendly competition pushed everyone to stay on track. With ten teams working at once, the room had a steady buzz from start to finish.
As the builds wrapped up, the focus moved to where the bikes were headed. The donation supported Purpose Learning Lab, a nonprofit that works with lower-income students. Earlier in the day, the company president had already spent time connecting with some of the kids, which made the final moment feel more personal. When the children entered to receive the bikes, the room shifted. People paid attention, took it in, and stayed present instead of reaching for their phones. It was a simple moment, but it stuck with the group. The next day, several leaders asked how they could revisit and share the experience.
We thank Compass Surgical Partners for their generous contribution to local students. We also thank Purpose Learning Lab for their inspiring work in the community.
